Magical Monday–You Can Be The Change!

mahatma gandhi“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”–Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi spoke these words many years ago. He is commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi–Mahatma is the Sanskrit word for “Great Soul.” His words are as relevant today as they were then. I believe each of us has something to offer our world that is unique–each of us is significant and important. Every person–every one of us–is special! And every person has the potential inside to be a Great Soul!

Sometimes we get a defeatist attitude: “I’m just one person.” “How can I make a difference?” “I’m not Mother Teresa–I’m JUST me.” “Who am I to think that I have something to offer?” But who are you not to? As Marianne Williamson expressed, “You were born to manifest the glory that is within you.” When we manifest that glory and we let our light shine, the Great Soul within emerges.

Each of us can be the change we wish to see in the world–it is our duty. As Deepak Chopra states, it is our responsibility to take hold of the opportunities that any problem represents.

So, I challenge you today to notice situations or events that you perceive as problems and then look for the opportunity or opportunities they represent. Find a way to grab hold of that opportunity and transform the moment into something better–a greater benefit for all. Then, know deep inside that you are the change you’re seeking.

Here are some examples from my own life experience:

1. If you are concerned about the quality of your children’s education or maybe even concerned about what they’re watching on television, enhance your children’s learning experience within your home. Instead of turning on television at night, choose a classic novel to begin reading as a family. This can be a great opportunity for just being together as a family and will promote discussion and sharing about the lives and times of people from the past.

2. If you are concerned about what is in the ready-made meal you sometimes eat or serve, prepare your own dishes using whole ingredients. Not only will you know exactly what ingredients went into the recipe, but you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you prepared it yourself. And you’re reducing your own environmental footprint by not serving foods that were manufactured, packaged and shipped from somewhere else.

3. If you’re concerned about global warming, find ways to minimize your impact. There are TONS of ways. Here’s one little idea that goes a long way: stop using paper towels and use rags and cloths instead. According to the National Resources Defense Council, Americans use an average 741 pounds of paper per person each year, and the paper industry is a major contributor to global warming, deforestation, and pollution. Although they’re convenient and disposable, they’re also costly – with an 8-pack costing on average $10 or more at the store, wouldn’t your money be better spent elsewhere?

Find your own opportunities and begin. Remember, no one and no action is too small!

SO…let the magic begin for you today!
